Development (ages 6 - 12) Non-competitive
For youngsters wishing to be part of the club but not travel to races. Skiers must be mostly
independent, and be able to ski all trails at the Snow Bowl. This program will emphasize free
skiing and gate skiing for skill development only. They will not be supervised at lunch.
Development - Competitive Ross Series
The Program is open to all young skiers who have an interest in ski racing. The coaching
philosophy for this level is simple: put on the miles and have fun! Technique will be introduced
through drills and games. Racers will improve through positive feedback and by skiing in all
conditions and all terrain. Races will be at home as well as at Killington, Pico, Ascutney, Okemo,
Suicide Six and Quechee ski areas. Ski racers must be members of
VARA
and USSA
to race.
Junior IV & V Program
(ages 9 – 12) Jones Series
Entry into this series is by a quota system for each club. Skiers should have basic racing skills and
be eager to work hard and learn. Training at this level is intended to improve the racer’s competitiveness,
although fun and sportsmanship are always emphasized. Super G events are added at this level.
Junior III Program
(ages 13 – 14)
JIII racers are considered to be in a transitional stage between youth racing and “seeded” competition.
Concentration on all aspects of ski racing is the focus. These racers spend more time gate training learning
tactics, line, and mental and physical preparedness.
Junior II and I Program
(ages 15 and older)
The club offers training and coaching to older racers, but it does not generally offer
traveling race support. Parent/coaches often travel with these racers.
Training
Dry land training is held on Sundays starting in October and continuing until the Snow Bowl opens. Places
and times to be announced. The Middlebury Ski Club trains on Friday afternoons and on weekends for the
duration of the ski season at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. There is training during the week between
Christmas and New Year’s Day, and a week during February which coincides with the local school vacation schedule.
We are extremely fortunate to race and train at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl and to have the support and
assistance of the wonderful staff there. The Ski Club’s log cabin is located at the base of the mountain where
the club meets, and has lockers.
